Born on Naboo in the city of Theed in 38 BBY, Soren Kel was just a young boy at the time of the blockade of Naboo by the Trade Federation. Rightfully worried for the safety of their family, his parents tried desperately to find a safe route off world, but met with no success. Some months after Queen Amidala’s daring escape, with no signs of the Federation’s blockade relaxing, his parents began lending their voice in peaceful demonstrations along with other brave Naboo natives. It was at one such demonstration that Soren lost his parents, Federation droids having opened fire upon the crowd after some among their number began throwing stones as part of their protest. It was from this inciddent that the young Naboo Resistance would draw fuel for their fire, but Soren Kel was to have no part in these events.
Years later, long after the Trade Federation’s blockade had ended, Soren Kel, now in his mid-teens, had taken up his family’s legacy farming wheat from the rolling plains of Naboo. Content with his work and his life, he began having terrible dreams in the months before the outbreak of The Clone Wars. The dreams were those of great emotional pain, death, and shattered dreams. Unknown to him, his nascent force sensitivity had begun to manifest itself in visions of the Jedi order’s destruction to a young man who would years later be a gifted Farseer. A few weeks after the dreams began, a new element manifested in his visions – the figure of a masked man surrounded by dark energy, but free of those dark energies himself. At first, the figure would present itself only as an observer, but in time, it came to serve as a silent guide through the worse of his visions. When the figure finally presented itself outside of dreams, it was only to communicate to Soren Kel that he would not reach his full potential as a farmer of Naboo. The figure explained that he was very gifted in The Force, and if he wished to experience it’s enlightenment and reach his destiny he must travel to Korriban and endure it’s trials before the figure would speak to him further. Then, it spoke no more.
In the days that followed, Soren arranged transportation to that planet on the Outer Rim. Barren and deserted aside from a few factories, Soren was at a loss for where to travel, what to do. After days of frustrated wandering, he finally collapsed, angry and exhausted, and it was in that moment of anger that he felt it – the dark side power that resonated from this place. Lacking a better option, he fearfully followed that resonating power to it’s center – The Valley of Dark Lords. Here, where the dark side energies were nearly overwhelming, the figure once again manifested itself before him. It spoke, and said to Soren:
I am the spirit of the Sith Lord Ajunta Pall. I was a Sith of the first empire following the Hundred-Years Darkness…though I am Sith no longer. Regret and doubt caused my spirit to linger on for thousands of years after my death. I was one of many. We were servants of the dark side…Sith Lords, we called ourselves. So proud. So strong, we thought…so wrong. In the era of the Old Republic, a valiant Jedi named Revan assisted me in finding my way back to the light and allowing me to become one with The Force. I have recently re-awoken – dark times will soon be upon the galaxy. The balance of The Force will be lost. I…wish to make amends for the follies I commited in my life. I sensed you, from across the galaxy. The Force is strong with you. I wish to show you the path of the Jedi, to guide your to your destiny and set right the wrongs of my life. But I shall not teach another student who will fall into darkness as I did. Here, on Korriban, the dark side is very strong. It resonates here in the Valley of the Dark Lords, where my tomb lies. If you wish to recieve my teachings, you will dwell here amongst these ancient stones, and demonstrate to me that you have the strength of will and morality to overcome the dark side.
Soren did as the spirit of Ajunta Pall asked, and dwelled amongst the Tombs of Korriban for a month. Ajunta Pall watched him from afar, watched him struggle with his darkness that the power of Korriban forced him to confront, and watched him overcome his anger, fear, and hate each time. After a month, the spirit of Ajunta Pall was certain in his choice of padawan, and bid Soren to enter his tomb. There, for the next three years, Soren lived in the Tomb of Ajunta Pall, the ancient spirit of the former Sith Lord teaching him all it knew of The Force, the Jedi, the Sith, the history of both orders, and the galaxy. Ajunta Pall’s holocron, one of his crowning achievements during his life, instructed Soren in the basics of lightsaber combat. Ajunta Pall was a master of many lightsaber forms – Ataru, Mikashi, Niman, Shii-Cho, Soresu, and passed his mastery of those forms on to his holocron gatekeeper. Ajunta allowed Soren to depart his tomb with the holocron, on his oath that he would return it once he became skilled enough to master it’s forms. Before departing, Ajunta Pall addressed Soren one final time:
A Jedi is what he is for his knowledge and connection to The Force. Despite this, no Jedi knight can be whole without his instrument of defense – the lightsaber. In time, as you hone your abilities and grow wiser in the ways of The Force, you will know how to craft your own. Until then…I would have you wield mine. Wield it with all the wisdom, temperance, and understanding that I did not. Return it to my tomb once you have sufficient masterty to craft your own. What comes will serve as great trial to you, my last pupil…both The Force and I shall help guide you along the path that will lead to your destiny, but your steps must be your own. I shall watch you, and offer my counsel when it is needed. May the Force be with you, my young padawan.
